Cat Care

Although a cat can provide lots of fun and enjoyment, there is a lot of responsibility that a cat owner should be aware of too.

Your cat needs access to a clean litter tray with a quality litter at all times. We would advise against the use of cheap clumping litters as these can be accidentally inhaled or ingested and may cause intestinal problems.

Provide your cat with a loving and comfortable environment with plenty of opportunity for play, exercise and frequent human attention. Buy at least one scratch post. Place them strategically next to those things that you want to protect.

Never assume that your cat will look out for and avoid dangers in your home. Cats will climb into washing machines, dryers and microwaves. They will chew through electric cables and ingest all types of small objects.

Be aware that some plants both houseplants and garden plants can be fatally poisonous to cats. Always do some research.

Remember kittens and cats can be naughty and disipline should only ever be done verbally. Never physically punish your cat.

Things to buy for a new pet cat

Diet

We feed our own cats and raise our kittens on Natural Instinct which is a healthy raw food diet and this is the food we recommend to our kitten owners.

However, we appreciate that raw feeding is not for everyone in which case we advise a mixture of wet and dry foods as this is beneficial to your cat’s teeth and helps prevent the build-up of tartar.

We suggest you use a high quality dry food that is 100% natural and additive and chemical free.

If you plan to change your cat's diet, always introduce the new food gradually over a period of several days to avoid any stomach upset.

Fresh water should be provided at all times.

Grooming

Grooming and eye care is an essential part of looking after your exotic cat.

Exotics, being shorthaired, do not require as regular grooming as a Persian. The main grooming activity is gently brushing of their fur every week to remove loose dead hair.

Eye drainage, in general, is very common in the Persian and exotic breeds.  The reason for this drainage is the flatter face. Pressure on the tear ducts cause the eyes to drain resulting in brown patches around the eyes. The brown patches are the result of bacteria. There are many supplements, cleansers and powders on the market that are very helpful in controlling this eye drainage.

Insurance

All pet kittens leave us with 4 weeks FREE insurance.

As we all know, vet bills are very expensive and we strongly advise that you continue to insure your cat via one of the reputable pet insurers and make sure they provide life-long insurance.

If your cat appears to be unwell or injured, take it to a qualified vet. Do not just leave it to see if it will recover. It's better to be safe than sorry.
